After one last glance at the landscape of the surrounding area, we enter a porphyry mountain by walking through a 300-meter-long tunnel. Philipp is the owner’s son and our guide for this special visit. He has extensive knowledge of water engineering and patiently explains to us the complex processes of how energy is created in this place.
As we further descend, the air starts to get humid, and the sound of water flowing louder. We walk across a steel bridge that keeps us suspended above impressive waterfalls. On the walls of the cave is installed a lighting system that creates special effects.
Not far away from the hydropower station is the small Heinrichshof wine estate, which since a few years is run by the young winemaker Heiner. During our visit, he explains to us the story of how he decided to give up his successful career as a businessman to become a biodynamic wine master. He also tells us the history of the estate and its tiny chapel to which we have exclusive access (he’s the only one with the keys to it). The last station is the wine tasting in the cellar, where Heiner stores its precious barrels. Sitting at the table with him, we taste his creations and enjoy a delicious South Tyrolean snack.
